Verify before you buy

Consumers can protect themselves by checking out contractors before they sign on the dotted line, according to state officials and the Better Business Bureau.

First and foremost, shop around, says the BBB’s Zan Deery, who recommends that homeowners get two or three bids for projects.

Next, verify the contractor’s name, address, telephone number, registration, insurance coverage and credentials, she said.

The Idaho Contractor Registration Act requires all Idaho contractors doing a job for $2,000 or more register with the Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licensing. To check if an Idaho contractor is properly registered, go to: www.ibol.idaho.gov/CONT/ General/CON_FAQS.htm.

Word-of-mouth referrals are popular but tricky. Check out contractor’s references carefully, said Jerry Nemec, chairman of the Idaho Contractors Registration Board. He recommends looking at past projects done by the contractor and finding out whether customers were satisfied. Consumers should also call past subcontractors to learn whether the contractor pays bills on time, Nemec said. For large projects, the homeowner might consider purchasing a surety bond.

In Washington, consumers can learn whether the contractor is licensed at the state’s Department of Labor and Industries Web page, http://www.lni.wa.gov/. The site also contains a helpful section called “Basics for Homeowners: Guide to Hiring a Contractor.”
