Fresh sheet: New Year calls for cooking classes
If Santa was stingy with gifts for the cooks in the house this year, treat yourself to a cooking class in the New Year.
There are plenty to choose from:
“Saunders Cheese Market and Vino! A Wine Shop are teaming up for a Jan. 22 class on Spanish wines and cheeses. The class will be held at Saunders, 210 S. Washington St., and the $45 fee includes the wine and cheeses. To sign up, call (509) 455-9400.
“Spokane Parks and Recreation is offering a host of classes including a new focaccia bread class with Tullia Barbanti. The class is $22 and will be held on Feb. 23. Or, learn how to make the ultimate comfort foods at the “Dumplings, Noodles, Biscuits and Pie Crust” class on Feb. 16 with Susie Snider for $32. There’s also a “seed to cup” coffee class that will be hosted by Dave Rier, roast master and coffee buyer for Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters. The class is March 1, and costs $10.
The entire Spokane Parks and Recreation Activity Guide is online at www.spokaneparks.org or call (509) 625-6200 for more details.
“Latah Bistro has been hosting regular cooking classes on Sundays and there are still a few spaces left in the Jan. 6 class on the “Tastes of Napoli.” Owner Heather Black-DuPree will feature authentic Italian pizza, other regional specialties and wine.
Future classes will include Latah Bistro Chef David Blaine and other chefs from the restaurant. The restaurant is closed during the classes so students can have full use of the kitchen and dining room. Students sit down to the three-course meal they made at the end of class.
Classes are $72 and include a Latah Bistro apron, instruction, recipes, ingredients, wine and the meal. To reserve a space (the class is limited to 10) contact Latah Bistro at dining@latahbistro.com or call (509) 838-8338.
“The Institute for Extended Learning also offers regular classes, although some of them can fill up very quickly. Classes offered include Thai cooking, low-fat, quick meals and “Time for Tea.”
The schedule is online at www.iel.spokane.edu. Call (509) 279-6000 to register.
“Raw Sushi and Island Grill will host a Jan. 24 demonstration on how to make sushi at Cena, 12501 N. Highway 395, Suite 3. The cost is $5. Call (509) 328-3709 for details.
