Bulls down Pistons

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Luol Deng scored 30, Ben Wallace finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds in his first game against his former team, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons 106-89 on Saturday night in Chicago.

Ben Wallace was as active as he’s been this season, delivering the type of performance the Bulls envisioned when they signed him to a four-year, $60 million contract.

He slapped hands with several Pistons by the scorer’s table before the game, then shook hands with and put his arm around Detroit coach Flip Saunders – the man he clashed with last season – before heading to center court. There, he bumped forearms with Rasheed Wallace.

Ben Gordon scored 23 and Andres Nocioni added 21 points for Chicago.

Richard Hamilton had his second straight 27-point game for the Pistons, and Nazr Mohammed scored 15. But Detroit was just 31 of 89 from the field.

Hawks 86, Clippers 74: At Atlanta, Joe Johnson scored 27 points, Zaza Pachulia added 22, and Atlanta ended an eight-game losing streak by beating Los Angeles.

The Hawks won for the first time since a Dec. 15 victory at Memphis. They won at home for the first time since beating Charlotte on Nov. 29.

Only four players scored in double figures. Elton Brand led the Clippers with 26 points, including 12 in the first quarter, and Tim Thomas had 14.

Trail Blazers 110, Kings 105 (OT): At Sacramento, Calif., Zach Randolph had 30 points and 14 rebounds for Portland, which tied the game at the buzzer in regulation and went on to defeat Sacramento.

Trailing 95-93, rookie Brandon Roy forced overtime with a 15-foot, fallaway jumper over John Salmons.

Mike Bibby, who led Sacramento with 28 points, made a 3-pointer to pull the Kings to within 106-105 with 6 seconds remaining. Jarrett Jack followed with two free throws for a 108-105 lead and Bibby missed a desperation 3-pointer on the Kings’ next possession.

Randolph’s two free throws with 1.7 seconds left clinched the victory.

Cavaliers 96, Nets 91: At Cleveland, LeBron James scored 19 points and added a season-high 13 rebounds, helping Cleveland cap its most successful week in nearly 14 years with a victory over New Jersey.

By beating San Antonio, Boston, Milwaukee and New Jersey since Tuesday, the Cavaliers have won four games in five nights for the first time since Feb. 2-6, 1993.

It’s just the streak the Cavs were looking for before departing on a seven-game, two-week road trip.

Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden scored 21 points apiece and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 16 for Cleveland.

Pacers 100, Hornets 93: At Oklahoma City, Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson each scored 27 points, Jermaine O’Neal made two key layups in his first game since issuing a challenge to his Indiana teammates, and the Pacers beat New Orleans.

O’Neal hit back-to-back layups from the left block to break away from an 83-all tie and spark a 10-3 run that gave the Pacers control of the game in the final 4 minutes.

O’Neal finished with 22 points in his first game since calling the Pacers “a very average team” and suggesting that he and the team should go “separate ways” at the end of the season “if I can’t take this team to another level.”

Jazz 96, Nuggets 84: At Denver, Deron Williams tied a career high with 28 points and Carlos Boozer shrugged off a slow start to finish with 24, leading Utah to a victory over Denver.

Williams also had 12 assists and Boozer grabbed 12 rebounds. The Jazz are now 21-5 when Boozer records a double-double.

Mehmet Okur and Derek Fisher each scored 10 points.

Allen Iverson finished with 22 points for Denver.
