Locally: NIC’s Boardman, Fouty earn national honors
North Idaho College softball players Angie Boardman and Strohm Fouty earned Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors for Division I of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Boardman, a 2005 University High School graduate, was an All-American second team selection as an infielder while Fouty, an outfielder from Polson, Mont., was named to the third team.
Boardman and Fouty led the Cardinals to a second-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament and a 46-26 record, the second-highest finish in school history.
College scene
The Washington State University women’s track and field team earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association honors for its academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2007 indoor and outdoor track seasons.
The Cougar women posted a 3.36 grade point average, ranking them 16th among all qualified teams.
In addition, six WSU student-athletes earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors including steeplechase competitors Kayle Peterson, Meghan Leonard and Sara Trane, hurdler Lorraine King, triple jumper Kaylee Gardner and thrower Jessica Zita.
Track & field
Standout Oregon sprinter Ryan Bailey of McKay High School in Oregon headlines another strong recruiting class for coach Larry Beatty’s track and field program at the Community Colleges of Spokane.
A multiple state champion, Bailey was second in the Nike Outdoor Nationals and third at the USATF junior nationals to earn a relay spot in the U.S. team for the Pan American Junior Games in Brazil. He has bests of 10.48 seconds in the 100 meters and 21.11 in the 200.
Twelve other state high school champions are joining the program, including shot putter Ashley Hutchinson and long jumper Taylor Cook of Mead, high jumper Kris Widman of Rosalia and sprinter Aaron Wafer of Moses Lake, Other Spokane area recruits include sprinter-jumper Sean Adebayo of Rogers, high jumper Justin Brayton of North Central, sprinter Angela Shearer and jumper Eleaya Schuerch of East Valley, Ashley Verzael of Deer Park, hurdler Brynn DeLong of Shadle Park and hurdler Arica Johnson of Lake City.
