Fresh sheet : Lots on tap for fundraiser

Sample more than 80 wines and a variety of beers next week at the third annual Stem and Stein fundraiser, which benefits the Spokane AIDS Network.

The event takes place at 6:30 p.m. on June 15 at the Northern Quest Casino Pend Oreille Pavilion.

In addition to the tasting of wine and beer, there will be a silent auction, as well as cheeses and chocolates to sample. Silent auction items include vacation getaways, wine- and beer-related goods, dining certificates and gift baskets. The winner of a cork raffle will take home a stocked wine cooler.

Stem and Stein tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Advance tickets are available through TicketsWest, (800) 325-SEAT or www.ticketswest.com.

Yakety yak

Ever had a yak burger? Here’s your chance.

Idaho yak farmer Tammie Damiano will offer up samples of her grass-fed yak meat from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Moscow Food Co-op meat department. Yak meat is similar to bison, making it low in fat and high in protein.

“Once you try yak, you can never go back,” says Damiano, who sells her frozen yak burger patties at the co-op.

Breakfast all day long

Now, you don’t have to spend the night at a bed and breakfast to eat at one – sort of.

The North Idaho Bed and Breakfast Association has published its first cookbook, called “Inn-Credible Edibles.” The book features recipes from 18 bed and breakfasts from Bonners Ferry to St. Maries.

The book includes a wide variety of breakfast dishes, but also features appetizers, soups and dinner entrees. “Inn-Credible Edibles” sells for $15 and is available at any of the participating inns. For a list, log on to www.bb-cda.com.

Shrimp Osaka cake, anyone?

Happy birthday to the Mustard Seed Asian Cafe, which celebrates 20 years in the Spokane Valley this year. (One more year and you can have some plum wine, Mustard Seed.) The Mustard Seed Noodle Express (that’s the quick and casual dining offshoot) celebrates a decade in the Valley this year.

Locally owned and operated Mustard Seed Inc. runs two Mustard Seed restaurants in Spokane and two in Montana. There are three Noodle Express locations in the Inland Northwest and three more in Montana.
