Yankees 9, Pirates 3: At New York, Roger Clemens allowed three runs, five hits and two walks in his long-awaited debut with the Yankees this season to lead New York to the victory over Pittsburgh.

Tigers 8, Mets 7: At Detroit, Carlos Guillen hit a three-run home run and Jeremy Bonderman won his sixth straight start in Detroit’s win over New York. Todd Jones got three outs for his 16th save in 20 chances.

Athletics 6, Giants 0: At San Francisco, Mark Kotsay and Travis Buck each singled in runs and Jason Kendall added a sacrifice fly as Oakland earned its seventh victory in eight games to capture its fourth straight series.

Rangers 4, Brewers 3: At Arlington, Texas, Michael Young singled off Francisco Cordero with two outs in the ninth to lead Texas to a come-from-behind victory over Milwaukee. Cordero had converted all 23 of his save chances coming in to the game.

Astros 3, White Sox 2: At Chicago, Lance Berkman hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth and Houston won back-to-back games for the first time since mid-May by beating reeling Chicago.

Phillies 4, Royals 0: At Kansas City, Mo., Jon Lieber struck out 11 in a three-hitter for his 25th career complete game, leading Philadelphia to a victory over Kansas City. It was Lieber’s fifth career shutout, and first since last Aug. 16 against the New York Mets.

Devil Rays 7, Marlins 2: At Miami, James Shields remained undefeated, pitching seven strong innings and Tampa Bay beat Florida. It was the ninth time in his last 10 starts that Shields has held the opposition to three runs or fewer.

Nationals 3, Twins 1: At Minneapolis, Levale Speigner surprised his old organization by cruising through six innings, Ryan Zimmerman hit a three-run homer and Washington beat Minnesota.

Rockies 3, Orioles 2 (10): At Baltimore, Kazuo Matsui doubled in the tiebreaking run with two outs in the 10th inning and Colorado received a strong pitching performance from former Oriole Rodrigo Lopez in the victory over Baltimore.

Angels 9, Cardinals 3: At St. Louis, Chone Figgins had four hits, pitcher Ervin Santana started a four-run fourth inning with a two-run double and Los Angeles beat St. Louis.

Indians 8, Reds 6 (11): At Cincinnati, Grady Sizemore homered and had three hits and Cleveland overcame Ken Griffey Jr.’s 578th career home run, beating Cincinnati. David Dellucci hit a two-run home run in the eighth to erase a 6-4 deficit, and Travis Hafner and Victor Martinez drove in runs in the 11th off Victor Santos.

Blue Jays 1, Dodgers 0: At Los Angeles, Shaun Marcum pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, Matt Stairs homered and Toronto beat Los Angeles to snap a three-game losing streak.

Red Sox 4, Diamondbacks 3 (10): At Phoenix, Mike Lowell’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly scored David Ortiz in the 10th inning and lifted Boston to a victory over Arizona. Jason Varitek homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Red Sox.

Associated Press
