WNBA: Shock take first loss of season
Tamika Catchings had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Tammy Sutton-Brown added 17 points as the Indiana Fever ended the Detroit Shock’s perfect start with a 77-67 win Saturday night in Auburn Hills, Mich.
The loss dropped the Shock to 7-1 and prevented them from tying the Los Angeles Sparks’ league record of nine straight wins to start a season.
Catchings was 5 of 10 from the floor, and hit 14 of her season-high 16 free-throw attempts for Indiana.
K.B. Sharp had 13 points off the bench, including three 3-pointers. She entered the game with only one 3-pointer this season.
Deanna Nolan and Katie Feenstra had 14 points each for Detroit, but no other player reached double figures.
Detroit was missing Cheryl Ford, who has a knee injury.
Lynx 83, Sparks 58: At Minneapolis, Kristen Mann scored 16 points and matched a career-best with four 3-pointers, and Minnesota won consecutive games for the first time this season with a victory over Los Angeles.
Minnesota, which started 1-9, snapped the Sparks’ three-game winning streak.
Silver Stars 79, Liberty 71: At San Antonio, Becky Hammon scored 22 points and had seven assists in her first game against her former team and the Silver Stars defeated New York.
It’s the seventh time in nine games Hammon has led San Antonio in scoring and the fourth time she’s scored at least 20 points.
Monarchs 75, Comets 63: At Sacramento, Calif., Chelsea Newton scored a career-high 17 points and the Monarchs pulled away in the second half for a victory over winless Houston.
The Comets have opened the season with 10 straight losses, eight by 10 or more points.
