Bulldogs take Banana Belt

Gonzaga’s Clayton Mortensen tossed a four-hitter with eight strikeouts, leading the Bulldogs past Lewis-Clark State 4-3 in Sunday’s title game of the SPORT Banana Belt Baseball Tournament at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.

The Bulldogs (9-8) finished the six-team round-robin tournament with a perfect 4-0 record, and handed the Warriors (12-1) their first loss of the season.

Ryan Wiegand hit a sacrifice fly to center in the top of the eighth inning that brought home Aaron McGuinness for the game-winning run.

•CC Spokane split a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges double-header with Treasure Valley in Ontario, Ore.

Cole Janini and Chad Berland (Ferris) both hit homeruns in the early game, an 8-4 Sasquatch (2-2) win.

In the second contest, Tom Barlow’s RBI-double in the second marked the lone CC Spokane run, as the Sasquatch fell to the Chukars (2-4) 5-1.

•Ryan Snell pitched eight innings, allowing three hits while striking out three, leading Whitworth past Pacific 10-0 in Northwest Conference play at Larson Field in Moses Lake.

Women’s golf

With four Cougars finishing in the top-25, including two in the top-10, Washington State landed a second place finish at the Red Rocks Invitational at the Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona, Ariz.

Freshman Diana Hong led the pack of Cougars, who trailed winner Northwestern by a stroke, shooting a final round 72, and completed the tournament in a tie for medalist honors at three-over-par 147.
