Athletics 5, Red Sox 4: At Boston, Dan Johnson doubled home the winning run in the 10th inning after Jonathan Papelbon suffered his first blown save in the ninth and Oakland stopped the surging Red Sox. Boston had won four of five games and began the day with the best record in baseball but wasted a 4-2 lead and another strong performance by Curt Schilling.

Twins 9, Devil Rays 1: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Sidney Ponson pitched seven impressive innings and Michael Cuddyer drove in two runs to lead Minnesota past Tampa Bay. Ponson gave up five hits. Both of his wins this season have come against the Devil Rays.

Tigers 5, Orioles 4: At Detroit, pinch-hitter Sean Casey hit a tiebreaking single with one out in the eighth inning to lift the Tigers over Baltimore. Craig Monroe also homered for Detroit and Placido Polanco went 4 for 5 with two RBIs.

Indians 12, Blue Jays 4: At Cleveland, rocked for three homers in the first inning, C.C. Sabathia (4-0) buckled down and Jhonny Peralta had a career-high five RBIs as the Indians beat Toronto.

Yankees 10, Rangers 1: At Arlington, Texas, Robinson Cano had four hits and drove in three runs and rookie Phil Hughes had a no-hitter in the seventh inning before leaving with a leg injury as New York pounded Texas.

Angels 7, Royals 5: At Kansas City, Mo., Vladimir Guerrero hit a first-inning grand slam and Los Angeles held on to beat the Royals for its 10th victory in 12 games. Kansas City has lost seven of its last nine games.
