Fresh sheet: Jundt exhibit puts spotlight on food

The Jundt Art Museum will host a free public walk-through of its new exhibit “Food for Thought” at 10 a.m. Friday.

Karen Kaiser, the museum’s assistant curator for education, will lead guests through the collection of food-related images.

The exhibit includes 20th and 21st century works by artists Thomas Hart Benton, Jim Butler, Sue Coe, Umberto Giangrandi, James Havens, Nona Hersey, Nangombe Kapanda, Clare Leighton, Reginald Marsh, Leopoldo Mendez, Ndasuunje Shikongeni, Wayne Thiebaud, Barbara Earl Thomas, Stanislaw Wejman, H. Andrew van Wyk and Tomoe Yoki.

The exhibit will be on display through March 8. It is part of Gonzaga’s university-wide discussion on food, eating and agriculture, which included several lectures earlier this year.

The Jundt Art Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays noon to 4 p.m. It is closed Sundays and Dec. 24, 25 and 31, Jan. 1 and 19 through 21 and Feb. 16 through 18 for school holidays. Admission is free.

Dry Fly Tasting

Taste some of the first spirits distilled in Washington since Prohibition on Tuesday at Latah Bistro.

Dry Fly Distilling will introduce its Dry Fly Gin and Vodka at the tasting, sponsored by Latah Bistro and Slow Food Spokane. The tasting is free and will take place from 5 to 9 p.m.

Distillers Ken Fleischmann and Don Poffenroth will be there to talk about their new Spokane distillery and the flavors of their Washington spirits made with locally grown grains.

Dry Fly released its first bottles in September and estimates it will sell 3,500 cases of vodka and gin combined in the first year of production. The retail price for a 750-milliliter bottle of Dry Fly Washington Wheat Vodka is $32 and Dry Fly Washington Dry Gin sells for $30. The distillery will be making whiskey as well.

Cheese and wine for the holidays

Huckleberry’s Natural Market will host its annual Cheese Extravaganza on Saturday.

Learn how to pair cheeses with the right wines for your holiday parties or create wine and cheese gift baskets.

Cheese and wine experts will be at Huckleberry’s, 926 S. Monroe St., with samples and advice from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Representatives from Somerdale, Emmi Cheese Co., Amaltheia Dairy, Carr Valley, Beechers, Lactalis, Kerrygold, Salemville, BelGioioso, Beemster and Champignon are expected. Spokane Wine Co., which is located in Huckleberry’s, will guide pairings for the cheese with the wines and beer they sell. Also, samples of Divina olives, Meza hummus, Cibo Natural pasta and pesto and Callebaut Chocolate will be offered.
