Tar Heels : hold off Buckeyes
Wayne Ellington and Deon Thompson led a second-half surge and No. 1 North Carolina held Ohio State without a field goal for almost 11 minutes in a 66-55 victory Wednesday night in Columbus, Ohio.
Ellington, averaging 17 points per game, scored 23 and Thompson had 14, most at critical times for the Tar Heels (6-0). Tyler Hansbrough was just 6 of 19 from the field and had 13 points and 11 rebounds in one of the premier matchups of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
(2) UCLA 83, George Washington 60: At Los Angeles, Russell Westbrook had 19 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the Bruins (7-0) to a victory over the Colonials (2-2).
Preseason All-America point guard Darren Collison added 14 points and recorded five assists in his season debut for the Bruins.
Josh Shipp scored 15 points for UCLA and freshman Kevin Love had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
(4) Kansas 87, Florida Atlantic 49: At Lawrence, Kan., Brandon Rush scored 17 points and the Jayhawks (6-0) routed the Owls (1-6).
Mario Chalmers hit two 3-pointers in a 12-0 run that put Kansas firmly in control at 32-13 and it was never any closer.
(5) Georgetown 66, Old Dominion 48: At Norfolk, Va., the Hoyas (4-0) got four points each from Jonathan Wallace and Patrick Ewing Jr. and three from Roy Hibbert in an 11-1 run to start the second half, opening a 41-24 lead with 16 minutes to play and diffusing the excitement that lasted through a close first half in a victory over the Monarchs (3-4).
(8) Texas 98, Texas Southern 61: At Austin, Texas, Damion James had 19 points and 10 rebounds and the Longhorns ran their record to 6-0 for the second time in coach Rick Barnes’ 10 seasons with a win over the Tigers (1-5).
Kevin Abanobi and Anthony Ike both scored 15 points for Texas Southern, which hit 12 3-pointers.
(9) Texas A&M 76, Alabama 63: At College Station, Texas, Donald Sloan had 15 points and eight assists to help the Aggies (7-0) post a victory over the Crimson Tide (3-2).
Crimson Tide star Richard Hendrix finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
(10) Michigan State 81, (24) N.C. State 58: At East Lansing, Mich., Goran Suton had 16 points and 12 rebounds and the Spartans (5-1) cruised past the Wolfpack (4-2).
The Spartans have won 30 straight non-conference home games at Breslin Center.
(23) Xavier 93, Oakland 68: At Cincinnati, Stanley Burrell scored 15 points in a tone-setting first half and the Musketeers (5-1) used one crushing run after another to beat the Grizzlies (2-4) for their fourth straight win.
Women
(5) Rutgers 56, Saint Joseph’s 50: At Philadelphia, Kia Vaughn had 12 points and 11 rebounds and the Scarlet Knights (4-1) survived a scare from the feisty Hawks (3-2) to hold on for a victory.
Epiphanny Prince scored 12 points and Matee Ajavon had 11 for a Rutgers team that could have used an easy warm-up before Monday’s game against No. 3 Maryland.
(6) Stanford 96, San Francisco 61: At Stanford, Calif., freshman Kayla Pedersen scored 18 points and Candace Wiggins added 13 in limited time, leading the Cardinal (6-1) past the Dons (3-4).
