Chatman won’t start, but will play
Coach Cam Cameron said that Ronnie Brown is Miami’s starting running back for Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins but didn’t relegate Jesse Chatman to full-fledged backup.
Cameron’s official naming of Brown came with the message that Chatman, the former Eastern Washington University standout, will contribute to the base offense after playing so well in the exhibition season.
“Personnel-wise, Jesse Chatman could be our starter too,” Cameron said.

Vick’s apology brings in cash
Bids topped $10,000 Thursday on an Internet auction site for what an animal rights group says are notes from football star Michael Vick’s speech apologizing for a dogfighting scandal.
The Humane Society of the United States is selling on eBay the single-page, six-point outline of the speech Vick gave at an Aug. 27 news conference in Richmond, Va., after pleading guilty in his dogfighting case.
The group is planning to put all proceeds in a restricted account dedicated to the prevention of dog fighting.
Bidding has been fierce since the group first offered the notes on Tuesday, even though there is no verification that the notes were used by Vick.
Cross countryUnusual twist to overland race
The first North Central Tracy Walters Trophy race, at Audubon Park on Saturday at 10 a.m., will have an unusual cross country twist.
One of the trophies will be awarded through the European Club method in which total participation counts. Varsity and junior varsity runners will be placed by times and awarded points accordingly, with high total score determining the winner.
Trophies will also be given for five- and eight-man low scores for 10-member varsity participating teams NC, Ferris, Central Valley, Mt. Spokane and Kamiakin.
The meet is named for the man who coached Rogers prodigy Gerry Lindgren to international distance fame in the 1960s. Walters still helps his son Kelly coach NC track.
