Azinger won’t remain captain

Paul Azinger will not return as U.S. captain in the Ryder Cup after leading the Americans to their only victory this decade.

The PGA of America will announce the new captain on Thursday, with all indications that it will be Corey Pavin.

“It ain’t gonna be me,” Azinger told the Associated Press on Monday. “I am not the captain.”

American players lobbied for Azinger to return as captain in 2010 when the Ryder Cup is played in Wales, and the former PGA champion was said to be considering it.

Jack Nicklaus in 1983 was the last American to be captain more than once, and the Americans have not had a captain repeat since Ben Hogan in 1949.

PGA officials plan to introduce the next captain Thursday in New York. PGA spokesman Julius Mason declined comment.

Gordon selected for Hall of Fame

Former second baseman Joe Gordon has been elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

The late Gordon was a nine-time All-Star with the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians. He played on five World Series championship teams and retired in 1950. He played collegiately at Oregon.

Gordon was the only person elected Monday on a ballot of players who began their careers before 1943.

Ron Santo, Gil Hodges and Joe Torre fell well short of the 75 percent needed for election to Cooperstown.

Just three Cougs on Pac-10 team

Three Washington State University football players received All-Pacific-10 Conference recognition on Monday.

Senior wide receiver Brandon Gibson, senior middle linebacker Greg Trent and redshirt junior center Kenny Alfred were each named All-Pac-10 honorable mention.

Gibson, a first-team selection last season, started each of WSU’s 13 games this season, hauling in 57 receptions for 673 yards. He completed his WSU career as the Cougars’ all-time leader in receiving yards (2,756), and second on WSU’s career receptions list (182).

Trent, an honorable mention pick last season, recorded a team-high 88 tackles in 2008, starting each of the Cougars’ 13 games.

Alfred, making his first appearance on the team, started each of WSU’s 13 games this season – one of only two Cougar offensive linemen to do so.

Tailback Jacquizz Rodgers of Oregon State was named the offensive player of the year and the freshman of the year. USC middle linebacker Rey Maualuga is the defensive player of the year and Oregon State’s Mike Riley is the coach of the year.
