Gonzaga women fall to S.D. St.
Jill Young scored 25 points and Jennifer Warkenthien and Kristin Rotert added 10 apiece to lead the South Dakota State Jackrabbits to a 78-64 non-conference women’s basketball victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the McCarthey Athletic Center on Friday night.
The Jackrabbits’ (10-1) reserves outscored Gonzaga’s reserves 44-8.
Gonzaga’s Heather Bowman led all scorers with 29 points on 11-of-26 shooting and pulled down 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Courtney Vandersloot had nine points and eight assists.
South Dakota State outrebounded the Bulldogs 50-38 and made 14 of 28 3-point tries.
Gonzaga suffered its second straight loss and fell to 8-3.
Volleyball
It was three years ago when Washington and Nebraska played for the NCAA volleyball title. This year, one of them won’t make it that far.
Airial Salvo, who transferred to Washington from Utah last year, had 15 kills against her former team, and the fifth-seeded Huskies hit better than .400 for the match to sweep past the No. 18 Utes (26-6) 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 in the NCAA tournament West Regional semifinals at Seattle.
Kindra Carlson and Becky Perry added 12 kills apiece for the Huskies. Jenna Hagglund racked up 36 assists.
Washington (27-4), playing on its home court as the regional host, will take on fourth-seeded Nebraska (30-2) for the regional championship tonight. That will be a rematch of the 2005 NCAA final, which the Huskies won in a three-game sweep at San Antonio, Texas.
The Cornhuskers breezed past Michigan (26-9) in three sets in Friday’s first regional semi, 25-13, 25-16, 25-18.
Men’s basketball
Damal Neil and Griffon Jones scored 17 points apiece and the Community Colleges of Spokane edged the Grays Harbor Chokers 75-73 in a non-conference game at Aberdeen, Wash.
Zach Humphrey added 14 points while Neil pulled down 10 rebounds for CCS (5-3).
Nick Shultens led the Chokers (0-6) with 28 points. Josh Hawks scored 12 and Larry Green and Gardner Torrence had 10 apiece.
Junior hockey
Chris Cucullu had a goal and two assists and Jacob Perish had three assists to lead the Nelson Leafs to a 7-3 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Spokane Braves at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
Six other Leafs scored one goal apiece for Nelson (27-5-1).
Dylan Pappi, Joel Stewart and Cody Mesick scored for Spokane (15-15-1).
Wrestling
Adam Tinnel (125 pounds) and Celic Bell (174) won by pinfall and Lester Brown (133), Kamron Jackson (184) and Rudi Burtschi (197) won by major decision as the North Idaho Cardinals claimed a 30-17 victory over the Northwest Wyoming Trappers at Christianson Gym in Coeur d’Alene.
