EWU women take easy basketball win

Kyla Evans came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points and grab eight rebounds to power the Eastern Washington Eagles to a 72-46 victory over the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers in non-conference women’s basketball play on Tuesday in Cheney.

Eagles reserves Amy Bratvold and Pauline Ferrall added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Eastern posted its largest margin of victory since Nov. 17, 2006.

The Mountaineers were led by the 10 points of Salena Leavitt.

Eastern (5-8) held EOU to 26 percent shooting in the first half in taking a 39-24 lead.

(22) Kansas State 73, Washington 60: Ashley Sweat tossed in a game-high 22 points and Shalee Lehning chipped in 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to send the Wildcats (12-0) to a non-conference victory over the Huskies (4-6) in Seattle.

Kristi Kingma paced Washington with 14 points, while Sami Whitcomb scored 13.

The Huskies trailed by three points at the half, but were outscored 42-32 after intermission.

Men’s basketball

Kevin Bond supplied the spark off the bench – hitting three 3-pointers on his way to 15 points – and the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch held off the visiting Highline Thunderbirds 67-63 at Spokane Community College in a final tuneup before NWAACC play begins.

Derek Gianukakis added 13 points for the Sasquatch (8-3).

Shedrick Nelson scored 19 to lead the Thunderbirds (5-6).

CCS trailed by six at the half before outscoring Highline 41-31 in the final 20 minutes.
