Gagner’s shootout goal propels Oilers
Sam Gagner scored his fourth shootout winner of the season, and the Edmonton Oilers earned their NHL-best 11th shootout victory of the season, beating the New York Rangers 3-2 on Saturday night in Edmonton, Alberta.
Jarret Stoll and Shawn Horcoff scored in regulation for the Oilers, and Dan Girardi and Chris Drury had New York’s goals. Drury’s power-play tally with 6.2 seconds left in regulation tied it 2-2.
Flames 6, Kings 4: At Los Angeles, Kristian Huselius and Daymond Langkow scored the tying and go-ahead goals on power plays less than two minutes apart in the third period, Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists, and Calgary beat the Kings for its fifth straight victory.
Sharks 3, Blue Jackets 2: At San Jose, Calif., Patrick Rissmiller scored two goals for the first time in his career, and the Sharks snapped their five-game home winless skid with a victory over Columbus.
Coyotes 3, Ducks 2 (SO): At Glendale, Ariz., Peter Mueller scored the only goal in the shootout to give Phoenix a win over Anaheim.
Avalanche 2, Islanders 1 (OT): At Denver, Marek Svatos scored 2:05 into overtime, helping Colorado snap a four-game losing streak with a win over New York.
Blues 1, Hurricanes 0: At St. Louis, Lee Stempniak scored his 50th NHL goal in the first period and Manny Legace made 26 saves to make it stand up as the Blues blanked Carolina.
Predators 4, Wild 1: At Nashville, Tenn., J.P. Dumont scored twice and Dan Hamhuis had two assists to lead Nashville to a win over Minnesota.
Flyers 3, Maple Leafs 2: At Toronto, Antero Niittymaki made 54 saves, and Steve Downie scored his first NHL goal to lift Philadelphia to a victory over the Maple Leafs.
Mats Sundin scored both goals for Toronto, which lost despite a 56-32 shots advantage.
Senators 4, Lightning 3 (OT): At Ottawa, Mike Fisher scored 3:17 into overtime and the Senators extended Tampa Bay’s losing streak to a season-high seven games with a victory.
Bruins 4, Devils 3: At Boston, P.J. Axelsson had a goal and two assists, Marco Sturm scored a short-handed goal with 0.6 seconds left in the first period and the Bruins beat New Jersey.
Penguins 3, Panthers 0: At Pittsburgh, Ty Conklin made 35 saves for his second shutout and seventh victory in seven starts this season and the Penguins won their sixth in a row with a victory over Florida.
Conklin, who began the season third on the organization’s depth chart and is in the NHL only because of an ankle injury to starter Marc-Andre Fleury, has started each of the past six contests and allowed only eight goals.
Red Wings 3, Stars 0: At Dallas, Dominik Hasek stopped 22 shots for his 78th career shutout, Brian Rafalski scored a first-period goal and league-leading Detroit beat the Stars.
The 42-year-old Hasek also reached 375 victories to break a tie with John Vanbiesbrouck for 11th place on the career list.
Capitals 5, Canadiens 4 (OT): At Montreal, Mike Green scored 1:27 into overtime for his third point of the game to lead Washington past the Canadiens.
Green, who also had two assists, redirected a pass from Michael Nylander past Carey Price for his 11th goal.
