Peters fined; Bruton sits
In the matter of the Western Hockey League vs. the Spokane Chiefs’ Chris Bruton, the case is now closed.
The final verdict reached the Chiefs on Saturday as they were preparing to take on, fittingly, the Everett Silvertips.
Bruton served the final of a two-game suspension on Saturday and Chiefs coach Bill Peters was fined $500 for comments made following the incident that were critical of Everett’s Kyle Beach.
It has also been confirmed that Beach suffered a concussion after Bruton leveled him following the Chiefs’ 2-1 loss to the Silvertips on Wednesday.
After some pushing and shoving among players, Beach shoved a glove in Bruton’s face, to which Bruton responded with a gloved right punch that sent Beach straight to the ice.
Beach was immobilized with a neck brace but helped off the ice by teammates. He did not go to the hospital following the game.
Beach did not play Friday or Saturday and will also miss Tuesday and Wednesday’s CHL-NHL Top Prospects game in Edmonton, Alberta.

Another Zag taken in draft
Senior defender Austin Washington, a Ferris High graduate, has become the third Gonzaga Bulldog drafted in the history of the MLS, taken in the fourth round by the Chicago Fire with the 54th pick overall in Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
As reported previously, Bulldogs senior forward George Josten was taken with the 20th pick in this year’s draft. He and Washington join 2001 second-round draft pick Brian Ching as the only Bulldogs to be drafted. Ching plays for the Houston Dynamo.
Washington was a two-time All-WCC second-team selection, including this past season.
Washington helped anchor a Gonzaga defense last season that allowed just 0.71 goals a match. The school record is 0.68.
Washington, an all-Greater Spokane League first-team defender as a senior, played at Whitworth College his freshman year before transferring to Gonzaga.
The Chicago Fire went 10-10-10 for 40 points and fourth place in the MLS Eastern Conference, but the Fire made a run to the Eastern Conference championship match before losing to host New England 1-0.
