RiverHawks post fourth straight win
Kyle Krustangel’s two-run double highlighted a three-run first inning Wednesday as the Spokane RiverHawks extended their West Coast Collegiate Baseball League winning streak to four games with a 6-4 win over the Moses Lake Pirates at Avista Stadium.
Beau Brett added his first home run for Spokane (10-11), a solo shot to left-center in the fourth. Winner Kraig Sitton (1-2) pitched six innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs while striking out five.
Cesar Lopez finished 3 for 4 for the Pirates (6-15).
Spokane is 6-1 at home heading into a three-game series with Bend, starting tonight at Avista.
Golf
Spokane’s Mandy Parsons and Eastern Washington University’s Marli Mikulecky lost in the round of 16 during match play of the 107th PNGA Women’s Amateur at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland.
During the round of 32, Mikulecky defeated Spokane’s Haley Parsons 2-up; Mandy Parsons needed 20 holes to defeat Sarah Jane Ababa of the Philippines; Spokane’s Lauren Howell lost to Chihiro Ikeda of the Philippines 3 and 2; and Colbert’s Amy Eneroth lost to Kennewick’s Brooke Henderson 2 and 1.
•Russell Grove of Hayden lost to Chandler Cocco of Bend, Ore., 3 and 2 during the first round of match play at the 107th PNGA Men’s Amateur at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.
In the day’s biggest upset, No. 62 seed Jason Shano of Scottsdale, Ariz., defeated third-seeded Michael Jensen of Los Altos, Calif., 2 and 1.
Thirty-two winners advance to today’s second round, including stroke-play medalist Erik Flores of Grass Valley, Calif.
Track and field
Washington State University freshman Jeshua Anderson had the fastest time in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles at the World Junior Championships at Bydgoszcz, Poland. His time of 51.12 seconds was the fastest of four heats. He advanced to today’s three-heat semifinals. The final will be run Friday.
Football
WSU’s home opener against California on Sept. 6 will be televised by Fox Sports Northwest, the school announced. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
