Luke Harangody had 29 points and 13 rebounds and No. 8 Notre Dame hung on to beat No. 6 Texas 81-80 on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.

Harangody, the Big East player of the year last season as a sophomore, was his usual force inside in a game that saw both teams combine for 49 3-point attempts. Notre Dame won that battle as well, hitting 11 from beyond the arc while the Longhorns made eight.

It wasn’t all great for Harangody, however, as he missed two free throws with 3.5 seconds left and the Fighting Irish leading 81-80. A.J. Abrams, Texas’ top 3-point shooter, got off a shot from just before halfcourt but it bounced off the rim.

This was the first matchup of Top 10 teams this season. There will be another tonight as the Fighting Irish (4-0) advanced to the championship game against No. 1 North Carolina.

(1) North Carolina 98, Oregon 69: Tyler Hansbrough, who missed three weeks of practice and three games with a leg injury, had 16 points to lead the Tar Heels (5-0) to a victory over the Ducks (3-2) in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.

Danny Green had 21 points and freshman Ed Davis had 11 points and 13 rebounds for North Carolina, which led by as many 37 points in the second half.

Michael Dunigan had 18 points to lead Oregon.

(4) Pittsburgh 74, Belmont 60: Sam Young scored 33 points despite not getting his first basket until more than 11 minutes into the game and the Panthers (5-0) defeated the Bruins (1-2) in Pittsburgh.

The Panthers won despite being without sophomore center DeJuan Blair (right knee inflammation).

(15) Marquette 85, Texas Southern 68: Jerel McNeal scored 20 points and Lazar Haywood added 18 to lead the Golden Eagles (4-0) past the Tigers (0-4) in Milwaukee.

Marquette failed to score 100 points for the first time in three games this season.

(20) Villanova 71, Monmouth 48: Dante Cunningham scored 19 points, Corey Stokes added 18 and the Wildcats (4-0) cruised past the Hawks (0-5) in Villanova, Pa.

Shane Clark added 10 points for the Wildcats, who won their 19th straight game at The Pavilion, their 6,500-seat on-campus arena.

Syracuse 89, (22) Kansas 81 (OT): Jonny Flynn had 25 points and hit a 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds left in regulation, helping the Orange (4-0) knock off the Jayhawks (3-1) in the championship game of the CBE Classic at Kansas City, Mo.

Syracuse trailed by 13 early in the second half but rallied behind hot shooting and a pressure defense. The Orange shot 14 of 24 in the second half and dominated overtime, hitting 5 of 8 shots to pull away early.

(24) Davidson 78, Loyola (Md.) 48: No points for Stephen Curry, no problem for the Wildcats.

In a bizarre game that saw the nation’s leading scorer go scoreless and attempt only three shots because of constant double teams, the Wildcats (5-1) still overwhelmed the Greyhounds (2-4) in Davidson, N.C.

Curry came in averaging 35 points a game, but he got into early foul trouble and then seemed more than happy to defer to his teammates.

Andrew Lovedale had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Davidson.

Other games

Long Beach State 88, Idaho State 82 (2OT): Donovan Morris scored 14 of his 24 points in the second OT to lead the 49ers (2-2) past the Bengals (1-3) in Pocatello.

Morris sent the game into the first overtime with two free throws, tying the score at 63 with 24 seconds left in regulation.
