WHL suspends Chiefs’ Wahl

Spokane Chiefs forward Mitch Wahl has been suspended three games by the Western Hockey League under supplemental discipline.

Wahl sat out Saturday night’s game at Seattle and will miss two Chiefs games this week, Friday at Portland and Saturday at home at 7 p.m. against Everett.

Wahl received a roughing penalty in the second period last Friday against Everett in a play that injured the Silvertips’ Graham Potuer.

Through his first six games of the season Wahl leads the club in scoring with five goals and five assists.

Oakes hits NFR standard

Bull rider Zach Oakes of Elk appears headed for the National Finals Rodeo after competing in the required 40 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association events.

Oakes voiced his frustration with the PRCA last month. He had won enough money to qualify for the NFR, but it appeared he might not meet the minimum requirement for rodeos.

A bull rider must compete in 40 PRCA rodeos before winnings from the PRCA’s Xtreme Bulls events count in the world standings.

Oakes, a two-time NFR qualifier, is ninth in the standings with $80,076, almost $12,000 in front of the 15th and final qualifying position.

Former Denver Broncos safety Hamza Abdullah agreed in principal Monday to sign with the Cleveland Browns.

Abdullah, 25, a former standout at Washington State University, started the final eight games for the Broncos last year and was playing with the first string this year in training camp until he suffered a groin injury.

Abdullah’s brother, Husain, is a defensive back for the Minnesota Vikings. Husain also played for Washington State.
