Mt. Spokane cashes in
The Mt. Spokane girls soccer team remained tied with idle Mead for the Greater Spokane League’s top spot with a 3-1 victory Friday at East Valley.
Ashley Berto had a big game for the Wildcats (11-1, 7-1, 21 points), scoring the opening two goals of the first half before the Knights (3-7, 3-5) could score their only goal of the match in the 35th minute.
With two weeks left to play before the postseason, Class 3A Mt. Spokane, and 4A Mead and Lewis and Clark are in a near dead heat.
•In other GSL matches: LC (10-3, 7-1, 20 points) kept pace with Mt. Spokane with a 2-0 victory over Central Valley (5-7, 4-4) at CV. Caylin Novell put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the eighth minute and they held the Bears to just two shots. … Gonzaga Prep (7-4, 4-4) continued to show its defensive dominance in a 2-0 shutout of visiting Ferris (5-8, 3-5). The Bullpups have allowed the fewest goals in the GSL this season. … Four players scored for University (9-4, 6-3), which blanked visiting Shadle Park (5-7, 3-5) 4-0. … Shannell Stout made senior day for North Central (1-8, 2-9) a memorable one, scoring two goals and leading NC to its first league win, against Rogers (0-8, 0-8) 6-1 at NC.
•3A District I-II: The match between the Intermountain League’s top two teams on the first day of the tournament went down to the wire, but No. 1 Bonners Ferry (6-4) held a 4-2 edge in the shootout to knock off Timberlake (3-8) 3-2 at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum. The Tigers scored in the 67th minute to force overtime, but BF keeper Sam Schmitz recorded three saves in the shootout. … The Badgers play Orofino today in the championship game after the Maniacs beat Kellogg (3-7) 4-0. The Wildcats advanced through the play-in game with a 2-0 win against Priest River by way of two goals from Ryder Ashcraft.

•3A District I-II: St. Maries (9-8-2) held off a stubborn Orofino (1-6) squad, winning its opening match of the tournament 1-0 at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum. Kendal McMillen’s goal in the 15th minute proved to be the difference for the Lumberjacks. … Meeting St. Maries today in the district title game is Bonners Ferry (10-6-1), which handled Priest River 6-0 in Game 2 of the tournament. Andre Zarate scored a pair of goals and Alex Mendez added a score and an assist for the Badgers.
Volleyball
•Greater Spokane League: Lewis and Clark (6-2) was never able to gain separation from University (5-3), but won 25-20 in Game 4 to clinch the 25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 25-20 win at LC.
