Trojans, Bengals will meet for title

The Post Falls volleyball team opened the Region I 5A volleyball tournament with a 25-14, 27-25, 25-15 sweep of Coeur d’Alene Saturday in Post Falls.

Andrea Mohney led the Trojans with seven aces and three blocks.

Post Falls will play host to Lewiston for the district title and a state berth Tuesday after the Bengals bested Lake City in five games, punctuated by a 15-12 win in Game 5. CdA and LC will play in a loser-out match at Lake City.

•Intermountain League: St. Maries strengthened its resume, sweeping a pair of matches against Orofino and Timberlake at Timberlake High School in Spirit Lake. Bree Arrhenius led the Lumberjacks (10-0) in its first match against the Maniacs with 18 kills and three aces. … Timberlake (3-6) made quick work of the Maniacs 25-14, 25-20, 25-18, led by the play of setter Haley Edelblute, who contributed 23 assists.

Great Northern League: Pullman (10-0) withstood a run by host Colville (7-3) in Game 1, but after taking the Indians’ best shot, settled in to earn the sweep 26-24, 25-16, 25-15. Stephanie Logan led with 11 kills for the Greyhounds.

Football

•Northeast 2B: Davenport (4-2) quarterback Cody Hopkins hit Ryan Zeller in the end zone with 58 seconds left to tie the game against Wahkiakum and then connected with Skyler Watkins for the winning touchdown in the second overtime for a 40-34 non-league win in Wahkiakum.

Cross country

•Can-Am Invite: Riverside sophomore Jess Mildes led the pack with a time of 20 minutes, 12 seconds in the 5,000-meter girls race in Kettle Falls. Her Rams won the meet with 40 points. Colton Hastings of Colville finished first in the boys, beating out Riverside’s Corbin Williamson by 6 seconds in 16:48. Colville won the team title.

Girls soccer

Great Northern League: Pullman (11-1, 9-1) converted six of its 16 shots in a 6-0 shutout of Colville (3-9, 3-7) in Pullman. Niina Al-Hassan scored three times and Amy Sterk added a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds.
