New rules coming

The Spokesman-Review

Regarding “The Call’ by umpire Jim Joyce on Detroit’s “Perfect Game.”

First off, he clearly missed the call. However, in his defense, he admitted calling it as he saw it. That’s what umpires get paid to do. I have to take my hat off to him for realizing after seeing the replay that he blew it. Plus, to call the pitcher and apologize, I don’t recall that happening.

As far as (baseball commissioner Bud) Selig reversing it, I don’t know where everyone else stands, but no way does it get reversed. Reversing this would be wrong based on an ump’s call (that can’t be under replay).

If anything, this call should set precedent for reviewing instant replay and allowing that type of play under the circumstances to be part of the game’s instant replay, since it’s already in the game.

I would have liked to see the umps meet right after the call to review the call and make the right one. Regardless, I’ll bet anything that a new rule or set of rules will result from this one play.
