Vandals sit in fifth place

Brad Tensen shot a team-best 4-under-par 68 and David Nuhn moved into a tie for 10th place with teammate Matt Rawitzer with a score of 141 as the Idaho men’s golf team remained in fifth place after Tuesday’s second day of the Western Athletic Conference Championship tournament at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

The Vandals moved up five shots from their opening-day round of 290, but tournament leader New Mexico State (557) picked up nine shots, overtaking second-place Nevada (561) and pushing its lead over third-place San Jose State (565).

NMSU’s Timothy Madigan leads the tournament with a score of 132.

Idaho will now play the final 18 holes of the three-day tournament, trying to improve for a third straight day.

Track and field

A pair of Community Colleges of Spokane decathletes finished second and third at the NWAACC Multi-Championships at Mt. Hood CC in Gresham, Ore. Carter Nell finished second with a total score of 6,175, almost 400 points short of decathlon champion Kevin Godfrey. The Sasquatch’s Spencer Wordell placed third with 6,085 points.

Winning the women’s heptathlon was Lane CC’s Sam Berryman with a score of 4,465. The leading CCS athlete was Sasha Rueben, who finished 10th with 3,220 points.

Honors

Idaho senior Gabriella Niculescu was named to the Western Athletic Conference women’s tennis all-tournament team for her performance at No. 1 singles at the WAC tournament last weekend.

Idaho’s James Rogan was named the WAC’s men’s field athlete of the week, while Whitworth baseball player Landon Scott was named the Northwest Conference offensive player of the week.
