MENLO, Calif. — Whitworth’s defense came up big, leading the visiting Pirates to a 20-7 upset of Menlo (ranked No. 24 in NAIA) in a non-conference football game at Connor Field, spoiling the Oaks’ homecoming Saturday. Whitworth (3-2 overall) forced five interceptions and held Menlo twice on fourth down in the fourth quarter to thwart any hope of an Oaks’ (3-2) comeback. Senior linebacker Paul Werhane led the defensive effort, returning an interception 36 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and finishing with a team-high 11 tackles.
