49ers running back Gore agrees to extension

Frank Gore has his new deal from the San Francisco 49ers, 13 days before the season opener. Just as he wished it.

Agent Jason Rosenhaus told the Associated Press on Tuesday that Gore agreed to terms on a new three-year contract extension that keeps him with the team through 2014. Gore is set to make $21 million, with $13.5 million in guaranteed money.

The team hadn’t made a formal announcement. That likely will come today ahead of the Niners’ exhibition finale Thursday night at San Diego.

Vick signs big contract

Just more than two years after being released from prison, out of work, mired in bankruptcy and facing an uncertain future, Michael Vick is again on top of the world.

Vick, who served 19 months at federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., on felony dogfighting charges before joining the Philadelphia Eagles as a third-string quarterback two years ago, signed one of the richest contracts in NFL history.

Vick’s six-year, $100 million deal makes him the third-highest-paid player in the NFL.

Around the league

New Orleans released former starting defensive end Alex Brown and signed veteran kicker John Kasay. The signing of the 41-year-old Kasay, drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 1991, comes after Garrett Hartley hurt his hip while kicking an extra point in New Orleans’ preseason victory at Oakland on Sunday. … After accurately snapping the ball to San Diego Chargers placke-kickers and punters since 1994, time finally ran out on seemingly ageless David Binn. The Chargers decided to release Binn, 39, the only player left from both their 1994 Super Bowl team and Bobby Beathard’s tenure as general manager.
