Sidelined All-Star center Evgeni Malkin, who had just returned from a five-game injury-related absence, has a major knee injury, Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Saturday. From the looks of it, the star forward won’t be back anytime soon. Malkin, who has 15 goals and 22 assists this season, has two torn ligaments in his right knee, according to Bylsma. It’s not clear if he’ll need surgery. Malkin was injured during Friday night’s 3-2 home win over the Buffalo Sabres. He had an MRI on Saturday, which showed the tears to both the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments.

Agreed The Minnesota Twins agreed to terms with left-hander Francisco Liriano on a one-year, $4.3 million deal that avoids arbitration. The 27-year-old Liriano went 14-10 with a 3.62 earned-run average for the Twins last season and started Game 1 of their playoff series against the New York Yankees. The season was the culmination of a long comeback from Tommy John surgery. Liriano missed all of 2007 after having the procedure, then struggled to regain his form in 2008 and 2009.

Died Former Montreal Expo Woodie Fryman, who pitched 18 seasons in the major leagues and was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 1995, has died in Ewing, Ky. He was 70. Fryman won 141 games from 1966-83 with the Expos, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. He pitched primarily in relief late in his career, saving 17 games for Montreal in 1980. Fryman had four career one-hitters.

Arrested Golden State Warriors guard Charlie Bell has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. The team said it informed the NBA that Bell was arrested early Friday in Oakland, Calif. Bell said in a statement released by the team that he is cooperating with law enforcement officials and won’t comment further. Bell has appeared in 15 games this season with Golden State.

Fined The NBA fined J.R. Smith of the Denver Nuggets $25,000 for a flagrant-2 foul against Raja Bell of the Utah Jazz. Smith was ejected after the incident in the fourth quarter of the Nuggets’ 113-106 loss to the Jazz at the Pepsi Center in Denver on Friday night.

Charged A Florida high school soccer goalkeeper has been charged with a felony count of hitting an opposing player during a postgame brawl in Live Oak, Fla. The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office booked 18-year-old goalie Jared Andrew Hendry on a felony battery charge. The arrest report said Hendry struck an opposing player in the mouth, breaking two teeth.
