Sidelined St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and miss the entire season. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed the news Thursday from the team’s spring training camp in Jupiter, Fla. He said he learned the severity of the injury after the 29-year-old pitcher sought a second opinion from Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. A surgery date is not set.

Declared New Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said Kyle Orton is his starting quarterback, not the popular but unpolished Tim Tebow. Fox’s comments came at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis and echoed remarks made by new football chief John Elway at this year’s Super Bowl.

Reprimanded First-year UTEP basketball coach Tim Floyd was reprimanded by Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky after an on-court outburst Wednesday got him ejected and then escorted off the court by a police officer during his team’s loss to East Carolina.

Announced Promising U.S. pairs figure skating partners Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett, the 2010 U.S. champions, announced the end of their three-year partnership at a news conference in Colorado Springs, Colo. Barrett is retiring while Denney plans to continue skating and will search for a new partner.

Acquired The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Alex Kovalev in exchange for a conditional draft pick with the Ottawa Senators. The trade was announced shortly after coach Dan Bylsma revealed that defenseman Brooks Orpik will miss between four and six weeks with a broken finger on his right hand.

Tagged The Oakland Raiders used the franchise tag to keep linebacker Kamerion Wimbley under contract for 2012. The team’s decision to use the tag means Wimbley will earn close to $10 million next season.

Sentenced Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones was sentenced in a Las Vegas courtroom to probation and 200 hours of community service under a plea deal for his role in a 2007 strip club melee in the city. Jones received a suspended sentence and was also ordered to receive anger management counseling. In addition, the sentence requires Jones to undergo random drug testing.

Injured Distance running great Haile Gebrselassie fell and injured both knees while training in the rugged countryside of Ethiopia, sidelining the long-distance running great for up to six weeks. The world-record holder withdrew from Sunday’s Tokyo Marathon and it’s unclear if he can run the half marathon in Vienna on April 17.
