Secret to a ‘Souper’ makeover

If anyone deserved a makeover, I think you’ll agree it was Dawny Taylor.

The 36-year-old Spokane woman has lost 228 pounds in the past seven years.

When she saw Progresso’s “Souper You Debut” contest, she started working on an entry, but didn’t finish. She decided to take a chance after it popped back up on her computer.

Taylor, who lost her weight following the Weight Watchers program, says some of the low-calorie Progresso soups helped her stay on track. Progresso makes 40 different soups with 100 calories or less per serving.

Progresso judges picked her essay along with 10 other finalists and posted them on the soup maker’s Facebook page, where customers chose Taylor and two other women as the makeover winners. Taylor won a trip to New York, where she and her husband were driven around in a limousine, treated to a head-to-toe makeover and guided through a $1,000 spending spree at Lord & Taylor. They stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Taylor says she let the stylists cut some 10 inches off her long hair, a style she’s been wearing for more than 18 years.

“It was amazing,” she says. “It was kind of my reward for all of my hard work.”

The most dramatic changes in her body have come in past few months and she was in desperate need of new clothes. “I’ve been losing about a size a month,” Taylor says.

She’s 36 pounds away from her goal weight and has no doubt that she’ll make it: “I’ve been on fire. I just have this amazing power and dedication.”

Spokane Public Market opens Thursday

The Spokane Public Market delayed its opening because of the construction and traffic snarl at Second Avenue in downtown Spokane.

The new indoor market, 24 W. Second Ave., opens Thursday. Enter the building near the corner of Second Avenue and Browne Street near the new Sun People Dry Goods Co.

The market features local producers, artisans and entrepreneurs selling their food, art, clothing and other goods. Vendor details are at www.spokanepublicmarket.org.

The market will be open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is available in the lot near Sun People and along nearby streets.
