Students host bistro nights at Orlando’s

From Staff Reports

The students at the Inland Northwest Culinary Academy at Spokane Community College will host “Bistro Night” dinners on March 9 and 10.

The culinary students will plan and prepare dinners for guests using seasonal ingredients and local products. They’re also making European bistro-style desserts and will choose wine accompaniment to complement the dinner.

The dinners will be at Orlando’s, the school’s student-run restaurant, at SCC, Building 1, Room 148, which is usually open to the public only at lunch. Seating times both nights are 5:30, 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m. Dinner is $35 per person without wine and $50 per person with wines. Reservations are required by calling (509) 533-7283.

Tomato planting, kids gardening classes scheduled

Learn about seed planting tomatoes from Washington State University Master Gardener Marilyn Carothers at Sun People Dry Goods on March 3.

Carothers’ class will include a presentation, hands-on activities, demonstrations and displays. She has advice to help gardeners avoid tall, spindly tomato plants and get strong, stout stalks instead.

Participants will take home a planted tomato seed. The class will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Registration is required, but the class is free.

Sun People Dry Goods is also hosting a class on March 10 that will include seed starting and planting for ages 6 to 12. Kendra Robinson-Harding of Discovery Education NW will teach the spring workshop. Children will learn about spring equinox, choose seeds to plant, decorate a clay pot and take home their completed indoor garden. The class will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and costs $25.

Register for the classes at the store or online at sunpeopledrygoods.com. A complete list of classes and films is also available on the website.
