Palmer drafted by Indiana Fever

WNBA: Gonzaga University women’s basketball senior Haiden Palmer was selected in the third round (29th overall) in the 2014 WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever, becoming the fifth player in Zags women’s basketball history to be drafted by the WNBA.

Palmer joins former Zags Courtney Vandersloot, Vivian Frieson, Kayla Standish and Katelan Redmon who have been drafted into the WNBA.

Palmer led GU in scoring average (15.1), rebounds (5.5) and steals per game (3.0) and made her third straight appearance on the All-WCC team.

UW’s Williams-Goss will return

Men’s college basketball: After considering whether to leave Washington and enter the NBA draft, point guard Nigel Williams-Goss has decided to return for his sophomore season, a UW spokesperson confirmed.

Williams-Goss averaged 13.4 points, 4.4 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2013-14. His father, Virgil, told the News Tribune last week that the NBA draft was a “serious consideration.”

Williams-Goss was selected as a member of the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

Sounders’ Dempsey player of week

MLS: Seattle Sounders FC designated player Clint Dempsey has been voted Major League Soccer player of the week for the second consecutive week.

Dempsey was honored again Monday after scoring two goals in the Sounders’ 3-2 win at FC Dallas on Saturday.

The vote of the North American Soccer Reporters was unanimous for only the third time in the history of the balloting.

Seattle will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Chivas USA.
