Obituary: Malmquist, Verna Louise

Age 85

MALMQUIST, Verna Louise 10/25/1928 - 8/28/2014 Our loving mother, grand-mother, great-grandmother and friend passed away in Spokane on August 28, 2014 after a battle with cancer.

Verna and her twin sister, Vera were born on October 25, 1928 to Emanuel and Rosina Siewert in Kulm, North Dakota.

After the passing of their mother, the family moved to Spokane, where she met and married Robert Watt in 1946.

Verna worked in food service for District 81 for a number of years, retiring in 1982.

After Bob’s passing in 1980, Verna met the second love of her life, Edwin Malmquist, and they had 31 years together, traveling, and spending winters in Arizona with numerous friends.

They both loved spending time with family and friends, dancing, playing cards and enjoying life.

Verna was the ultimate homemaker and aside from being the designated pie baker for any occasion, she also enjoyed gardening and her volunteer work with the VA Hospital and the Discovery Shop.

Verna is survived by her children, Ken (Dana) Watt; Vicki (Dwight) Carruthers, Shelley (LeVon) Davis; and stepsons Steve, Kyle (Cindy) and Lee (Jenny) Malmquist; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Vera, Nora and Leona and by her brothers, Roy and Calvin.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday, September 13 at 2:30 p.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Spokane for their loving care of Verna.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Verna’s life, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Spokane, American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, or a charity of your choice.
