Announced After 14 seasons, Dave Dombrowski is out as president and general manager of the Detroit Tigers, ending a run in which he helped turn the franchise from an afterthought into one of the American League’s powerhouses. The four-time Central champion Tigers abruptly announced the move Tuesday. Dombrowski was in the last season of his contract and overseeing a team stuck below .500. He is being replaced by Al Avila, who has served as his top assistant since 2002. Detroit won the A.L. pennant in 2006 and 2012.
• Longtime sports broadcaster Brent Musburger, who grew up in Billings, will call the season-opening football game between Montana and four-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State in Missoula.
Suspended Montana senior linebacker Herbert Gamboa has been suspended for the team’s season-opener against North Dakota State for violating team and athletic department rules. The school announced the suspension after Gamboa pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
Injured Utah Jazz point guard Dante Exum has injured his left knee while playing for the Australian National team in a game against the Slovenia National team in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Exum will return to Salt Lake City for further medical evaluation.
Died Former Detroit Lions running back Mel Farr, who rushed for over 3,000 yards in seven NFL seasons, has died. He was 70. Farr spent his entire NFL career with Detroit, from 1967-73. He was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1967, when he ran for 860 yards in 13 games. He ran for 717 yards in 1970, helping the Lions go 10-4 in the regular season and reach the playoffs for the first time since 1957.
Agreed Dutch club AZ Alkmaar has given Aron Johannsson permission to talk to Werder Bremen after both sides agreed on a transfer of the U.S. striker. AZ says on its website “when AZ and Werder have completely worked out the details, Johannsson reaches a personal agreement and he comes through the medical test, the American international will sign a multi-year contract.”
Out Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has announced running back Greg Bryant will not play for the Irish this season, saying he failed to meet expectations. Kelly previously had suspended Bryant for the first four games of this season for violating team rules. Bryant was second on the team in rushing last season with 289 yards on 54 carries.
