Obituary: Sowl, Wallace W. “Wally”

Age 95

SOWL, Wallace W. “Wally” (Age 95) Wally passed away August 6, 2015.

He was born May 16, 1920 in Spokane, WA.

Wally and his two sisters, Clara Mc Ateer and Josephine Martin grew up in the Scotia/Newport area and graduated from Newport High School.

He went to trade school and trained as a machinist, then worked for the US Forest Service manning fire towers and building trails.

He then joined the Army and served in the Aviation Engineers on Okinawa and Je Shima.

After the war, he worked as a logger for a short time, then as a machinist until he retired.

He volunteered at the Newman Lake Fire Department and served as Fire Commissioner for several years.

He was a devoted Grange member for over 60 years where he served as Master and many other offices.

Wally met and married his wife Leila “Winnie” Garrison in 1943.

They had three children.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Winnie; his three children, Byron Sowl, Jerry Sowl (Maki), and Patty Sowl Pohle (Fred); nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters; numerous nieces and nephews.

Wally’s quiet strength, devotion to family, love and smiling face will be greatly missed.
