Area roundup: Toreros rally in sixth to defeat Cougars

The San Diego Toreros pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 5-4 nonconference baseball victory over the Washington State Cougars (12-8) on Tuesday in San Diego.

WSU did all its damage in the top of the fourth inning. Shane Matheny and Shea Donlin drilled RBI singles, Wes Hatten ripped a run-scoring double and Ian Sagdal pushed across the final run with a groundout.

Tyler McDowell (1-2) took the loss for WSU. He allowed two earned runs on no hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Patrick McGrath had two hits for WSU.

Women’s golf

Washington State sophomore Cherokee Kim and freshman Alivia Brown led the Cougars to a 12th-place showing at the 15-team Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Arizona.

Kim carded an 8-over-par 224 (tied for 30th), while Brown finished at 9-over 225 (tied for 38th).

The Cougs finished with a 911 team total, one stroke behind 11th-place Wisconsin.

Southern Cal, led by medalist Karen Chung (11-under 205), won the team title at 834.

Idaho’s Leilanie Kim shot a 7-over 223, tying her for 26th, to help the Vandals place 14th.

Men’s tennis

Gonzaga junior Hayden Smith was named the West Coast Conference singles player of the week after leading the Bulldogs to a 3-1 record during spring break. Smith lost just once in the four matches from the No. 3 singles spot.

• Idaho junior Odon Barta was named the Big Sky Conference men’s tennis player of the week. He went 2-0 in No. 2 doubles and 2-0 in No. 1 singles as the Vandals beat Sacramento State and handed the Montana Grizzlies their first loss of the season.
