Vancouver Giants slam Spokane Indians 7-0 in Northwest League

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Vancouver Giants used one big hit to put away the Spokane Indians 7-0 in Northwest League action Friday night at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Spokane (5-10) trailed just 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when disaster struck. Indians starter Nick Green (0-2) hit the first two batters he faced. After striking out Bryan Lizardo looking, Green walked D.J. McKnight to load the bases and end his night. Alex Daniele relieved and promptly hit Andres Sotillo to force in a run. Mattingly Romanin stepped to the plate and smacked a grand slam to complete the five-run outburst on just one hit.

Vancouver (8-7) took an early lead in the third against Green. Sotillo singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a two-out single by Yeltsin Gudino. Cavan Biggio doubled to score both runners and the Giants grabbed a 2-0 lead.

As it turned out that was all the runs the Giants would need.

The Indians managed just five hits on the night. Vancouver starter Luis Sanchez was one out shy of qualifying for the victory. He allowed three hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. Grayson Huffman (1-0) followed Sanchez and surrendered just one hit in 2 1/3 innings to get the win. Huffman struck out 3 of 7 batters faced. Stuart Holmes pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Jackson Lowery gave up a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth.
