Youth notebook: East small schools, led by Ty Graham, win all-star football game

The East dominated the West in the 22nd-annual Earl Braden All-Star football game for 2A, 1A, 2B and B football players last Saturday at East Valley High School near Yakima.

Ty Graham of Cheney scored his team’s first touchdown on a 2-yard run as the East won going away 25-0.

Graham also anchored a defense in the secondary that took advantage of five fumbles and three interceptions.

“Being able to hold up that zero was rewarding; it showed how all the hard work in practice paid off,” Graham told the Yakima Herald newspaper.

Graham came up with two of the three second-half interceptions.

West Valley’s Tevin Duke was named the game’s most inspirational player.

CdA grad hired at Lake City

For the second time in a year, Lake City athletic director Jim Winger had to fill the head volleyball coaching position.

This time he didn’t have to look far, hiring former Coeur d’Alene volleyball and basketball standout Jenna (Griffitts) Leggat.

Leggat, 29, takes over for Brian Hosfeld, who resigned to pursue business opportunities.

“I didn’t expect to have him a long time,” Winger said of Hosfeld, a longtime collegiate assistant coach. “He was a fantastic coach. But I’m pretty thrilled to get Jenna. She’s got all the tools. She fits what we need.”

Leggat inherits a team with much returning talent.

A 2005 Coeur d’Alene graduate, Leggat went to Weber State on a basketball scholarship. She played one year of basketball followed by four years of volleyball.
