Annie Iona (Hansen)
(Age 94)

Passed away February 24, 2016, in Fremont, Santa Clara, California.

She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 29, 1921 to Hans and Annie Katherine Hansen.

She was educated in Mt.

Pleasant, UT, graduating from Wasatch Academy in 1939.
lona went to San Diego, CA in 1942 for a two week vacation, and lived there for 40 years.

During WWII, she worked at Consolidated Aircraft Corp where she met her future husband, Wayne Lawrence Schmitz, a US Marine Sergeant from McClelland, Iowa.

They married March 9, 1946 and made San Diego their home where they raised their two children, Shanna Joy and Rex Wayne.

lona and her family were active LDS church members, she in the Primary and also in the Relief Society which she thoroughly enjoyed.

lona moved back to Mt.

Pleasant, UT in 1982 with her young grandson Paul Jason McColloch whom she raised until he graduated from North Sanpete High School, and he then joined the US Marines.
While attending her 50th year class reunion at Wasatch Academy, Iona became reacquainted with her classmate Jack C. Haymond.

Their relationship blossomed into love, and they were married May 28, 1991.

She moved to Spokane, WA where he lived.

Many of Iona’s happiest years were spent with Jack as they traveled and shared their many mutual interests.

She felt he was the love of her life.

They were inseparable until his death in 2004.

Jack’s son and daughter-in-law, Lou and Mary Haymond, helped care for Iona until 2011 when she became unable to live semi-independently in her home.

Her son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Pam Schultz, then moved her to live near them in California where they could help with her care.
lona is preceded in death by her son Rex, her parents Hans and Annie Hansen, an older sister Ida Hansen Stott of Mt Pleasant, UT, and a brother Albert Hansen of Fairview UT, a niece Norita Stott Lancaster of Mt.

Pleasant, UT, and a very favorite nephew, LaVoy Stott of Moroni UT, whom she always felt was more like a brother to her.
lona is survived by her daughter, Shanna Joy Schmitz Creney of San Diego, CA, and daughter-in-law Pamela Jeffers Schmitz of Milpitas, CA, five grandchildren including Paul Jason McColloch (Angela) of West Hartford, CT, Stephanie Joy Miller (Nicholas) of Ramona, CA, Hans Joseph Schmitz (Mellissa), Melissa Marie Schmitz, Thomas Rex Schmitz, all of Milpitas, CA.

She also had eight great- grandchildren: Brittany Tipton McColloch of Azusa, California, Heath Miller, Olivia Joy Miller, Wyatt Miller, Annie Kathleen Miller, and James Miller all of Ramona, CA, and twins Madison and Alexis Schmitz of San Jose, CA.

Iona is also survived by Jack’s living sons, Lou Haymond (Mary) of Spokane, Jack H. Haymond of Thief River Falls, Minnesota and David Haymond of Boise, ID.


Additional survivors include very special nieces and nephews, Tim Hansen of Fairview UT, Zelia and Newell Christensen of Rupert, ID; Micky Stott of Moroni, UT; Michelle Kiefer of Mt.

Pleasant, UT, and Victoria Parrish of Boiling Springs, South Carolina.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to caregiver Camala Prosser of Spokane and the staff at Emeritus in Fremont, CA for the kind, loving and professional care they have given to Iona.

Funeral services were held Mt.

Pleasant, UT.
