Lawmaker Profile: Washington state Rep. Andy Billig

Hometown: Spokane

Party: Democrat

District: Legislative District 3, one of three districts contained within Spokane County boundaries; it is contained within the city of Spokane, including East Central, Logan, Hillyard, downtown, the lower South Hill and West Central.

Background: The only Democrat from Eastern Washington in the Senate, Billig is the deputy minority leader. He’s a voice for political and election reform in the Senate, with regular proposals to increase voter registration and participation. He also has sponsored legislation to improve water quality with a long-running fight to reduce PCBs in the environment. When he made his first speech on the Senate floor, Billig followed the tradition of giving other members gifts from his district, which included Spokane Indian caps with the team’s logo in Spokane tribal language.

Last election: Won re-election with 67 percent of the vote.
