Area softball: UCLA defeats Washington

Rachel Garcia pitched a complete game and smacked a two-run homer to help UCLA defeat Washington 6-2 in Seattle and earn its fourth straight win.

Madeline Jelenicki opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning. Brianna Tautalafua drove in the go-ahead run for the Bruins (25-8, 1-3 Pac-12) with an RBI single in the fourth after the Huskies rallied to tie. Gabrielle Maurice added a pair of runs.

Ali Aguilar tied the game for the Huskies (26-7, 3-4) with a solo shot in the third. Kirstyn Thomas added a pair of hits.

Garcia (9-4) struck out six and gave up just five hits.

Taran Alvelo (15-4) struck out four but was charged with all six runs, five of them earned.

North Idaho 11-14, Columbia Basin 3-6: Ana Raynor and Jamie Yurick each recorded five hits on the day as North Idaho (11-3, 5-1 Northwest Athletic Conference) swept Columbia Basin (4-13, 2-8) in a doubleheader in Coeur d’Alene.

Megan Carver drove in four runs and Raynor, Yurick and Kalyna Korok each scored a pair of runs as the Indians won the opener.

Kayla Moore (5-2) scattered 12 hits in a complete game to earn the win, while the hosts tagged CBC starter Tristan St. Peter (2-4) with 17 hits.

In the second game, Raynor was 3 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs as NIC dominated again. Emily Aspden and Kennedy Anderson each drove in three.

Taylor Ramey was 3 for 3 with two runs for the Hawks. McKenzie Brittos (5-1) worked three innings before Audrey Seipert came on to pick up her first save of the year. Cassidy Rowe (1-3) suffered the loss.
