Officials identify Tonasket man killed in Saturday assault

A 57-year-old man who was assaulted and killed in Tonasket on Saturday has been identified as Denney Dare.

Deputies responded around 6 p.m. to 319 S. Whitcomb Ave. after hearing report of a man who had been assaulted and was covered in blood, according to an Okanogan County Sheriff’s office statement.

Dare was dead when deputies and first responders arrived.

At about 10 p.m., deputies arrested Antonio Mateo, 34, near Loomis, Washington. He was booked into Okanogan County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder.

Results of the autopsy completed at Central Washington Hospital will be available at a later date, the sheriff’s office said.
