Say ‘Olé!’ for Baja Bargarita

Bar plus Margarita equals Bargarita. Pretty canny name for a margarita bar, I’d say. Baja Bargarita is the full name, coined by proprietress Jessi Briseno, combining the beachy vibe of the western Mexican state and the nightclub’s trademark beverage. A nice frozen margarita is pretty much the best way to cool down after a long blazing summer afternoon full of lying in the sun like a sizzling strip of turkey bacon and doing nothing at all but re-applying Coppertone and reading Stephenie Meyer novels.

Senate candidates’ ads: We are worthy

BOISE – The two major-party candidates for Larry Craig’s U.S. Senate seat have hit the airwaves, each with a television commercial trying to catch the attention of voters statewide and convince them of the candidate’s worthiness to take on the thorny issues facing the nation. Republican Jim Risch’s ad focuses on gas prices, energy policy and Risch’s record as a governor who “just gets things done.” Democrat Larry LaRocco’s ad focuses on the impact on Idaho families of price increases, job losses and declining wages, and LaRocco’s campaign strategy of working a day each at various jobs around the state, from garbage hauler to roofer to nurse’s aide, “working side-by-side with Idahoans.”

Temperature variations? Let’s talk about albedo

When temperatures near or exceed the century mark, I will inevitably hear from various people about how hot it got in their town or at their house. Though the official high in Spokane or Coeur d’Alene may have only reached 98 or 99 degrees Fahrenheit, someone will tell me how “off” our temperatures were because his or her thermometer read 107 degrees.

ATHOL – Lightning flashed and thunder’s bass drums played a symphony across the sky. Torrential rain and hail pounded the ground just two hours before the Athol Daze Parade kicked off. Bassett home oldest in the county

The first home Wilbur Fisk Bassett built for his family in 1872 near Four Lakes burned down during a large grass fire two years later. He built his second cabin on the same spot in 1874 – and it remains today the oldest still-standing home in the county. Historians are quick to point out that there is a structure at Fort Spokane, at the confluence of the Spokane and Columbia rivers, that is older. True, but that building was used for other purposes and was never an inhabited home – which leaves the Bassett home recognized as the oldest in the county.

Bookstore reaches out to college crowd

Amid the nightly swarm of foot traffic to Cheney’s three most active bars sits a little yellow building, its windows gleaming in the glow of green and red traffic lights as a younger crowd cheers or stumbles or just walks by. The Cornerstone Christian Bookstore has witnessed more than 20 years of college malarkey from its corner location. Its newest owner, Tom Stradling and his family, bought the store last year to reach out to college students. The Stradlings haven’t made a dime since, but they never intended to.

Budget proposal presented to CVSD board

After months of discussing budget shortfalls, there were few surprises when the proposed 2008-2009 budget was presented to the Central Valley School District board of directors on Monday. There seems to be a partial reversal in the number of teachers, however. This spring the district announced layoffs for classified staff and that 19 retiring teachers would not be replaced. The proposed budget calls for 842.7 certificated staff for the coming school year, compared with 850 last year.
