Time on his hands

CHENEY – If you want to know what time it is in Charlie Prentice's house in Cheney, no problem. There's a clock pretty much every place you look. Prentice makes clocks big and small, maneuvering his scroll saw with the precision of a surgeon and the art of a Renaissance master. Some of the scroll work is so small and intricate that it's hard to believe it was produced by the hands of a man with carpel tunnel syndrome and arthritis.

Vocal Point: If we make an effort to fight hunger, we can make a difference

Recently, a leading United Nations official termed our current world food crisis as the "new era of hunger." While many of us feel the pinch through increased grocery and fuel prices, we have little to complain about in comparison to much of the world's population who spend 75 percent of their income on food. The "perfect storm" caused by high energy costs, climate changes, and skyrocketing oil prices is wreaking havoc throughout our world.

Bayview loses 3 residents

A tragic Tuesday hit Bayview last week as three residents died on the same day, June 3. Archie Orth, a longtime resident, fisherman and golfer, spent much of his life driving trucks. He didn't have much hearing left for the last few years and it sometimes got in the way. On one such occasion, he was driving a dump truck for Athol Aggregate. Crossing the railroad tracks near Careywood, a train bore down on him, furiously blasting its whistle to no avail. The train hit Orth, threw him out of the truck and he landed, somehow, on the other side of the train. He survived that with shoulder and arm injuries. Unfortunately, he couldn't beat the cancer that had taken over his body.

Blackwell’s logging credentials impressive

Editor's note: This is the ninth in a series of articles exploring the history of Spirit Lake and its environs as the community nears its centennial in August. Spirit Lake native Keith Spencer became interested in local history when he came across some old photographs while remodeling his home. He and his wife, Janette, researched the photos' origins, began collecting old documents for posterity and now can't seem to stop. During research for this series, it became apparent that media interest during the early days had focused on the charms of both the railroad and the amazing Village of Spirit Lake.

Cannon Hill pond’s industrial past part of area buildings

Sometimes a pond is just a pond. And sometimes it isn't. The pond at Cannon Hill Park on Spokane's South Hill is one of the latter. While it looks like a lovely little body of water, a perfect scenic backdrop for a picnic in the park, with all the ambience that a gentle little lake should have, it actually has an industrial past.
