Cheney will keep Pathways ties

After much discussion last week at the Cheney City Council meeting, the city will extend its contract with Pathways to Progress, a program that works with both Eastern Washington University and the city to help revitalize the downtown core. City Administrator Arlene Fisher and Community Development Director Brian Jennings presented to the council arguments to extend the contract.

Claus, company to visit senior center

Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and all of the elvs from the North Pole are taking a break from their busy schedule to visit the good girls and boys and their families for breakfast on Dec. 13 at the Southside Senior Activity Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave. The holiday celebration with St. Nick and his family will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 10 to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $15 for adults and $12 for children.

Dirt track permit denied

A proposed Elk-area dirt racetrack complex has been denied a necessary conditional use permit. Spokane County Hearing Examiner Michael Dempsey last week rejected a request by Dwaine and Cheryl Dodd, 40115 N. Jackson Road, to operate a “commercial recreation area” in a “rural traditional” zone.

EWU class putting on carnival at Salnave

Salnave Elementary students and their families will have a tropical afternoon today with students in the recreation programming class at Eastern Washington University. The Tropical Treasure Carnival will be presented from 3 to 5 p.m. and will include food, snacks, drinks, 13 carnival booths and prizes. Highlights include tropical bowling with coconuts and tiki heads, jumping castles, a raffle and a giant game of Twister.

Former Whitworth professor dies

Fenton Duvall, a former Whitworth University history professor, died on Nov. 11. He was 96. Duvall became a professor at Whitworth in 1949. During his tenure he co-founded the Core program with Professor Emeritus of English Clarence Simpson, and became the first faculty member to lead an international Jan Term study program. He also served as dean of students for four years.

Hannah Montana is fundraiser’s theme

The Hannah Montana “Rock the World” Party will be at the Southside Senior Activity Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave., on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. The party is for kids ages 5 to 12.
