City hires Sam Taylor as deputy administrator 20 

Sam Taylor, a Coeur d'Alene native whom many of you on this blog know, has been hired as the deputy city administrator for the Lake City. Taylor worked for five Northwest newspapers before landing a job as city administrator in Ferndale, Wash. He comes to Coeur d'Alene from Moro Bay, Calif., where he served as deputy city manager.

Dem write-in to face Dixon 

Write-in candidate Stephen Howlett has defeated Bob Vickaryous to become the Democratic nominee for the District 1 House seat now held by Rep. Sage Dixon, R-Ponderay; the two will face off in November. Howlett received 408 write-in votes, exceeding the 392 cast for Vickaryous, whose name was on the ballot.

With a couple of close legislative races around the state, the question arises of possible recounts. Betsie Kimbrough, state elections director in the Idaho Secretary of State’s office, has this explanation: “We don’t have automatic recounts.” But for the closest races those a free recount is available.

Ex-fighter pilot bests McMillan

A former fighter pilot took down Rep. Shannon McMillan in Tuesday's primary election, while a rancher was on his way to ending Sen. Sheryl Nuxoll's re-election hopes in Idaho's sprawling 7th Legislative District. Priscilla Giddings coasted to victory over McMillan on the Republican side of the ballot.

CdA to launch Moore memorial

Mayor Steve Widmyer of Coeur d'Alene will launch the memorial campaign for the late Sgt. Greg Moore and all fallen heroes across the nation. Widmyer will make the announcement at McEuen Park at 2 p.m. Thursday. McEuen Park will be the site of a water feature honoring Sgt. Moore and the others.

String quartet concert at Fedora 

Beaujolais 184 (a string quartet: members Cathyanne Nonini, Joyce Torgerson, Scott Grunsted and John Wheeler) is set to play the dinner show at The Fedora from 6:30 until 8:30 this evening. The quartet's music is eclectic, ranging from Beatles to Beethoven, Rock & Roll to Rhumbas, "Ode to Joy" to "Over the Rainbow."

Voters boot radical commissioner 

Idaho County Commissioner Jim Chmelik was another uber-conservative official turned out of office by north-central Idaho voters. Chmelik lost a GOP primary contest to former Cottonwood mayor Denis Duman. Chmelik is the registered agent for a group that's trying to legally challenge federal ownership of public land.

Midtown theater to be proposed 

The Modern Theater will be proposing the details of a new midtown “place-making arts district” to the board of ignite cda this afternoon. Modern Theater board member Adam Graves said he is hesitant to discuss the project without presenting the details of the proposal with the urban renewal board first.

Library levy fails to get 55%

A tax levy proposal to support seven community libraries was nixed by voters during Tuesday's primary election. A total of 5,264 (50.06 percent) voted in favor and 5,252 (49.94 percent) against. The proposal needed 55 percent voter approval to pass.
