Friday’s openings: ‘Guardians’ and love songs

It’s only May and the summer movie season has seemingly already started. That’s at least how it seems with the movies scheduled to open this coming Friday.

The lineup at this point:

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”: It seems just yesterday that James Gunn’s version of the Marvel Comics superhero team burst on the scene. But it was 2014. Then came the sequel in 2017. And now we have Vol. 3, which reunites the characters played by Chris Pratt (Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket (the raccoon) and Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot (the tree-like humanoid). This time the team’s mission is to protect Rocket.

Kate Erbland of IndieWire wrote, “The Guardians appeal because their hard-won bonds feel real, even within the confines of the outsized MCU and the particular environs the space jerks find themselves in.”

“What’s Love Got to Do With It?”: Lily James plays Zoe, a filmmaker who documents her childhood friend’s arranged marriage to a Pakistani woman.

Michael Rechtshaffen of Variety wrote that the film “Gives both heart and funny bone the attention they deserve.”

“Love Again”: Here’s the farfetched pitch from IMDb: “A young woman tries to ease the pain of her fiancé's death by sending romantic texts to his old cell phone number and forms a connection with the man the number has been reassigned to.”

No reviews available. Seldom a good sign.

I’ll update as the week progresses.
