Icona Vulcano smolders at Shanghai Auto Show
When Chinese-Italian auto designer Icona set out to produce a rolling example of their design muscle they came up with the Vulcano. Judging by the salivating crowds it attracted at the Shanghai Auto Show this month, there’s a good chance the hybrid supercar will see limited production. Although with five models total being considered for development, most of the world's ultra-rich playboys will have to settle for more conventional rides, such as a Ferrari or Lamborghini.
For those wondering what the deal is with all the fire imagery in the stock photos above, Vulcano is indeed Italian for volcano.
In keeping with what appears to be the fast-approaching future of the supercar, the Vulcano is powered by a hybrid-drive powertrain. Of its two iterations, the most powerful is dubbed the H-Turismo. The setup slaps a 790hp V12 engine in line with an electric motor integrated into a manual gearbox, which boosts total output to 950hp. Using rear wheel drive, Icona says the Vulcanao H-Turismo will erupt (sorry) to 62mph in 3.1 seconds.
Hybrid option number two doubles down on electric grunt with a system dubbed H-Competizione, which uses a 550hp twin-turbo V6 engine to power the rear wheels. A duo of electric motors drives the front tires, boosting peak output to 870hp. With the AWD system clawing for grip the Competizione Vulcano can reach 62mph in 2.9 seconds.
It would be a real shame if Icano decided making a single Chinese-Italian volcano was sufficient . Cars this hot (sorry) are rare enough already.
