Senate passes omnibus spending bill; Crapo, Risch both vote ‘no’

The U.S. Senate has passed a $1 trillion omnibus spending bill to keep the federal government operating through September, on a 79-18 vote; both Idaho GOP Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch voted “no.” The 18 “no” votes all came from Senate Republicans.

On Tuesday, a day before the House passed the bill, President Donald Trump, also a Republican, said, “After years of partisan bickering and gridlock, this bill is a clear win for the American people.”

In the earlier House vote, Idaho’s two GOP representatives split, with 2nd District Rep. Mike Simpson voting “yes” and 1st District Rep. Raul Labrador voting “no.”

Here are Crapo’s and Risch’s full statements about their votes today:

CRAPO:

“As a senior member of both the Senate Budget and Finance Committees, I have worked to advance responsible, comprehensive solutions that address our mounting debt, rein in spending and tackle the long-term drivers of our deficits.  While the bill passed by Congress today does contain good policy measures, such as strengthening our national defense, investing in our border security, and funding priorities for Idaho, it does not go far enough to address our nation’s fiscal health.  This measure will fund the government until September 30, providing us another opportunity to tackle our debt.  As that process unfolds, I will work with my colleagues and the Administration to ensure that it helps address our nation’s long-term fiscal demands while funding the priorities important to Idahoans.”

RISCH:

“Since coming to Washington, I have consistently pressed Congress to change its out-of-control spending habits. The federal government borrows nearly $1.25 billion A DAY; this is not sustainable and threatens our children’s and grandchildren’s futures. While there were many individual provisions I opposed, and many I supported and was glad to see included, I could not in good conscience vote for an overall increase in spending.”
