Huckleberries Online

Inside Huckleberries — 10/27/06

Colleague Erica Curless and nephew Lane Joseph Phelps earlier this week after she helped her brother-in-law coach her sister in delivering their first baby at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane.

*Note from state rep wannabe Bonnie Douglas to SR newsroom: "Bonnie Douglas called this week to say that her NRA rating had been upgraded to an 'A,' from the previous 'A-minus' status."

*From Marianne Love: Jean (Owens) Brown died at 11:45 a.m. today in Sandpoint. She was the wife of the late Jim Brown Jr., the founder of the Pack River Lumber Co. who helped establish Schweitzer Basin Ski Area in 1963. He and the Brown family became the sole owner of the ski resort by the mid-1980s. He died on April 17, 1989. Afterward, their daughter Bobbie Huguenin took over Schweitzer Mountain Resort.

*Another Group Opposes Prop 2: "The Post Falls Chamber Legislative Committee thoroughly researched and discussed this issue and then made a recommendation to the Board to oppose Prop 2. The board considered this issue and decided to oppose Prop 2. Prop 2 would have a negative impact on our community, furthermore, HB 555 already addressed the issue of Eminent Domain in a way that is satisfactory."

*I'm reading through Taryn Brodwater's break-out sheet re: the $400,000 in expenses run up by the Kootenai County Public Defender's Office: $990.45 twice in February for a defense seminar in Monterey; $622 to run down a National Inquirer interview; $952 for a trip to Sun Valley by Public Defender John Adams and two staffers. Must be nice. Also, I now know what it costs for two orders of hashbrown and eggs, an oatmeal, side English muffin, soft drink and two lattes at the Coeur d'Alene Inn: $32.

*Frum Helen Back: "Heading south today on Pleasant View the Dixie Services sign was just advertising his business. On the other side it read: 'Wanted: Pretty wife and pretty kids.' It makes me wonder if Mrs. Valentine got fed up with her husband."

*Just In: Jim Hagengruber's been called downtown to the Death Star. So, he asked that he not be pressed for a final decision re: the blog name. A dark horse candidate has emerged to challenge: "The Back 40." Ready? It's "The Sludge Report." Stay tuned.

*Sandpoint Sue is right when she e-mails that today's Dilbert cartoon is a must read for bloggers/blurkers/commenters here.

*An online poll conducted by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce reveals that 83.3% of the respondents oppose New Yorker Howard Rich's Proposition 2.
