Because You Asked: Of Wheelchairs & Segways
re: Duffer's question whether motorized wheelchairs and Segways are allowed on Centennial Trail
Motorized wheelchairs are OK on publicly owned local bike and walking trails, more or less. In a telephone interview a few moments ago, City Attorney Mike Gridley told Huckleberries that each jurisdiction supervises its segment of the publicly owned Centennial Trail. And might have its own rules for its portion. But motorized wheelchairs are listed under the "pedestrian" heading of state law and OK for publicly owned trails. Segways might be, too. Seems the creator/promoter of Segways schmoozed all the state legislators to include them under the pedestrian section for trails as "electric personal assistive mobile devices." Although the Centennial Trail Foundation specifically recommends that Segways not be allowed on the Centennial Trail or the soon-to-open (@ 4 p.m. July 12) Prairie Trail spur, a Segway rider could have a legal leg to stand on in a fight over a citation.
